How to keep your printing environmentally friendly

There are plenty of times when you can’t beat printer and ink, but with great printing comes great responsibility. We all need to be responsible with our printing and paper usage — trees make our air breathable, they’re our best carbon dioxide absorbers, and we need to make sure we don’t use them recklessly.

Fortunately, you can minimise or even negate the impact your printing has on the environment — you can even leave it better off than before. Here’s how.

Don’t get a printer

Every printer is going to reach the end of the line one day, and then it’ll probably end up in landfill, adding to the 14 million tonnes of waste we send there every year.

If you were thinking of getting a printer, ask yourself if you really need one. The same goes if you were planning to upgrade an old one — dispose of it responsibly, but then you might find that you don’t need to replace it.

You can use ours.

Printing with us means that we can stop a lot of energy and plastic going into the production of personal and business printers, and in turn prevent those machines from ending up in landfill and polluting the soil and water.

Choose your printing options carefully

When you’re about to get something printed, your choices can make a big difference in the resources you use.

More colour doesn’t necessarily mean a better document. Black and white printing uses far fewer vegetable dyes than colour ink, so if it’s not totally necessary to print in colour, think about keeping it in monochrome.

If there’s more than one page to print, don’t forget about printing double-sided. That way you’re using half the amount of paper straight away.

Plant a tree

They call the rainforest the lungs of the planet for a reason. As far as carbon capture and storage goes, human tech solutions are incredible, but nothing beats woodland. It’s for that reason that we need to be responsible with the Earth’s resources and respect the fragility of its ecosystem. Plus it’s only fair — we all use trees, so we should replace them.

The good news is you don’t have to do it yourself. We’re partnering with One Tree Planted to plant a tree for every 5,000 pages we print. We also donate a portion of the cost of every page to the Woodland Trust, who protect, restore, and create wooded habitats in the UK. Print with us and you’ll be doing your part to keep printing sustainable.

You could also opt for a click and collect option and pick up your printing from a store within walking distance. There are over 350 stores nationwide where you can collect your Printt order, so there’s probably one very near you.
